Why You Need an Outdoor Griddle

May 2024

Comparison shopping 101, plus the best griddle recipes!

Griddle vs Grill: Shopping Tips for Busy Moms

What’s the difference between a grill and an outdoor griddle (aka flat-top grill)? Both are perfect for summer, when it’s sunny, hot and you’d rather cook outside. Unless the grill in question is powered by old-school charcoal, both appliances feature gas burners, turn on with the flip of a switch or push of a button and are knob controlled. And, unless built in, both are mobile, meaning they can be positioned anywhere on the deck, porch or patio you like.

If you’re shopping and weighing options ― plus, you’re a busy mom ― the griddle is ideal. The large flat surface offers enough space to cook foods big and small, without veggies and delicate cuts of seafood and meat slipping through grates. Further, griddles eliminate guesswork around direct and indirect heat, fear of under (or over) cooking and messy prep and clean up. And, lastly, griddles can handle any meal of the day, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Morning pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs, alfresco? Yes, please!

Need any more convincing? Some newer models feature independent cooking zones, so you can customize temperature per item cooked, and come complete with air fryers and warming drawers! So, while a main course and sides cook on the griddle top, appetizers can be sizzling in the air fryers and cooked items held in the warmer until the meal is ready to serve. Easy to assemble, season, clean and operate, a flat-top grill may replace your gas grill entirely – or, at the very least, make it pretty darn lonely!
